Penetrating Deck Stain & Sealer That Won't Peel

Six years of protection. One application. No film to crack, peel, or trap moisture underneath.

C2 Guard doesn't sit on your deck — it penetrates into the wood and protects from within.

You've been here before.

You stained your deck. It looked great for a few months. Then it started peeling, cracking, or wearing away completely. You stripped it, prepped it, and did it again. Maybe you've done it three times now.

That cycle exists because most deck stains form a film on the surface. Films crack. Films trap moisture. Films peel. And when they fail, you start over.

Guard doesn't form a film. That's why it doesn't peel.

Protection That Becomes Part of the Wood

C2 Guard uses nanoparticle technology to penetrate past the surface and bond within the wood's cellular structure. Instead of a film sitting on top, Guard creates a flexible, breathable barrier inside the wood itself.

This barrier sheds water, resists mold and mildew, and prevents the cracking, cupping, and warping that destroy decks from the inside out. Because there's no film on the surface, there's nothing to crack, peel, or flake — ever.

When the color fades from sun exposure (and it will, like any stain), the waterproofing protection stays active underneath. When you're ready to refresh, you clean the surface and recoat. No sanding. No stripping. No starting over.

The specifics

Up to 6 Years on Decks

Most deck stains need recoating every 2-3 years. Guard protects horizontal surfaces for up to 6 years — and up to 10 on vertical surfaces like railings. That's not marketing. It's what happens when protection lives inside the wood instead of on top of it.

~300 Sq Ft Per Gallon

Guard's low viscosity means it penetrates deep and spreads far. Most competing stains cover 100-150 sq ft per gallon. Guard covers roughly twice that — which changes the math on a per-project basis.

Non-Toxic. Actually.

Less than 50 g/L VOC — below the lowest U.S. standard. Safe for children, pets, plants, and aquatic environments. Guard was formulated this way from the start, not reformulated to meet a regulation.

The real price of a deck stain isn't the gallon. It's the years.

A typical 300 sq ft deck needs about 1 gallon of Guard per coat, applied twice (wet-on-damp). Total product cost for 6 years of protection: around $200.

With a conventional deck stain at $50/gallon and 150 sq ft of coverage, that same deck needs 2 gallons per application — and you'll do it 3 times over 6 years. That's $300 in product, plus three rounds of cleaning, prepping, and staining.

Guard costs more per gallon. It costs less per year. And it costs you one weekend instead of three.

16 STAIN COLORS. OR GO CLEAR.

Guard stain colors are formulated with the same attention to pigment and depth as C2's 496-color interior system. From warm honeys to coastal grays, each is designed to look rich on day one and age well over time. Colors are translucent — they'll look different on cedar than on pine, and on new wood versus weathered. That's the point.

FIVE STEPS. YEARS OF PROTECTION.

  1. Clean — Use C2 Wood Cleaner to remove dirt, mold, and residue.
  2. Dry — Let the surface dry. A bit of dampness is fine.
  3. Test — Drop water on the wood. If it soaks in, you're ready.
  4. Apply first coat — Brush or spray in manageable sections.
  5. Apply second coat wet-on-damp — While the first coat is still damp, apply the second. This is how Guard achieves full penetration.

Guard works on your wood

Cedar & Redwood

Absorbs Guard easily. One of the best substrates for semi-transparent stain colors — the natural warmth of cedar comes through beautifully.

Pressure Treated Pine

Use Kiln Dried or let new pressure-treated wood season for a few months before applying. Once it's ready, Guard penetrates the open grain and locks in protection.

Pine & Fir

Softer woods absorb quickly. Watch for puddling and back-brush any excess. Two coats wet-on-damp and you're done.

Ipe & Teak

Dense hardwoods are harder to penetrate. Let the wood weather, then sand with coarse-grit paper to open the grain before applying. Less is more — over-application on hardwoods can cause stickiness.

FAQ

Up to 6 years of waterproofing protection on horizontal surfaces like decks and stairs. Stain color will fade gradually from sun exposure, but the protection underneath stays active. When you're ready to refresh the color, clean the surface and recoat — no sanding or stripping required. Vertical surfaces like railings are protected for up to 10 years.

No. Guard is non-film-forming — it penetrates into the wood rather than sitting on the surface. There's no film to crack, peel, or flake. Peeling happens when a surface film traps moisture underneath and breaks down. Guard avoids this entirely by bonding within the wood's cellular structure.

Yes. Either use kiln-dried/heat-treated or let new pressure-treated lumber season for a few months until the wood can absorb water (test by dropping water on the surface — it should soak in, not bead). Once the wood is ready, apply Guard using the standard two-coat wet-on-damp method.

Guard is water-based with penetration that matches or exceeds oil-based stains. It cleans up with soap and water, has less than 50 g/L VOC (most oil stains are much higher), dries in about an hour, and is safe for children, pets, and aquatic environments. Oil-based stains require mineral spirits for cleanup, have stronger odor, and typically last 2-3 years on decks compared to Guard's 6.

The waterproofing protection lasts up to 6 years on horizontal surfaces and 10 on vertical. Stain color fades over time from UV exposure — you may choose to refresh the color before the full 6 years depending on sun exposure and appearance preference. Refreshing is simple: clean with C2 Wood Cleaner, let dry, and apply a fresh coat. No sanding, no stripping.

Yes. Guard is designed for both DIY homeowners and professional contractors. Apply with a brush or garden sprayer. The key technique is the wet-on-damp method: apply the second coat while the first is still damp. Most decks can be completed in a single afternoon.

If water penetrates your current wood, Guard will penetrate as well. Guard works best on bare, clean wood. If your deck has an existing film-forming stain, that stain needs to either be removed or worn from time. Clean the surface thoroughly with C2 Wood Cleaner and test absorption before applying.
