Wellness is a broad, growing category that encompasses the connection between mind, body and spirit. There is a union between these three elements that can be balanced and enhanced with some of the following rituals. (Note: it includes making a conscious effort to slow down a bit and create a more mindful environment).
1. Make your Bed
This might seem simple, but creating this daily habit is powerful. In fact, one of the most revered speeches of the last decade was from “Make Your Bed” by Admiral William H. McRaven, a Navy SEAL, in which he explains how the power of starting the day with a decisive action sets a positive tone for the day.
2. Eat a Smart Breakfast
Make your first meal an opportunity to properly “break your fast”, so opt for healthy choices. Bring in beauty early in the day by using your favourite china and carve out time to create a mindful moment. This would be an excellent time to embark on #3.
3. Set an Intention for the Day
To be clear: these are not goals; they are aspirations and values you strive to exemplify. This could be done daily or weekly. An example is: "today, my intention is to harness the power of my divine creativity." Another is to remain in a grateful mindset through the day. Set an intention that works for you, no matter how simple.
4. Bring Nature Indoors
Infuse your home with flowers and greenery. Not only do they emit oxygen and clean the air, plants also allow you the opportunity to get creative. Seasonal selections are always refreshing and add impactful colour. If you are on a budget, use clippings from your yard to create your masterpiece!
5. Invest Wisely
Some home items are worth the investment. Some of my favourites are:
a good bed and pillows
a comfy couch
a French press coffee maker
colourful, organic soaps
Think about what’s important to you. What are the simple pleasures that spark joy in your life?
6. Learn Something New
They say the secret to youth is to continue learning. Try a class of some kind to benefit both the mind and body. It will exercise your brain and spur your creativity. Plus, you'll feel accomplished adding a new talent to your repertoire.
7. Be Present
For us busy, goal-seeking humans, this is not an easy task. Look to your dog or animals for inspiration (seriously!). They are truly present in every moment and enjoy life’s simplest pleasures with gusto! Focus on multi-tasking less and instead structure your time with more focus. Grab some fun notepads and keep your essential items at the top of your list.
8. Read More (Without the Guilt)
Whether it’s a book, online articles, or magazines, just read. Enjoy some me-time in a favourite chair with a cup of tea. Setting aside time to enjoy a good book is one of life's simple pleasures. Writing also falls under this category. It's truly cathartic to free write (whatever comes into your mind). Turn the tv off, power down and start journaling your thoughts and ideas. You'll be surprised at what you discover!
9. Change it Up
Repaint a room, move the furniture around, invest in a reshuffle of a room that has felt awkward and in need of attention. Addressing an area of your home that needs updating will provide a sense of personal accomplishment and refuel you for the next project.
10. Essential Oils
Aromatherapy is the stimulation of smell receptors in the nose, which then send messages through the nervous system to the limbic system — the part of the brain that controls emotions. Surrounding yourself with smells that create positive reactions like eucalyptus, lavender, sandalwood and tea tree oil can help create a relaxing or uplifting environment. Note: It's VERY important to get high quality oil and follow the instructions carefully in case you are allergic. Fun fact: many big brands create their own recipes so customers associate their brand with a particular scent.
